As a flight attendant, one of the greatest perks of my job is exploring the world’s cultures through food. Indonesia, with its rich culinary heritage, has always been a favorite destination of mine. From the beaches of Bali to the bustling streets of Jakarta, every bite tells a story of tradition, spice, and warmth. Here are the top five dishes I recommend every traveler—and flight attendant with a layover—must try in Indonesia.
1. Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice)
Where to try it: Warung Made in Bali or any local warung (street-side eatery) in Jakarta.
Nasi Goreng is Indonesia’s national dish for a reason. This flavourful fried rice is stir-fried with kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), garlic, shallots, and often topped with a fried egg. It’s served with prawn crackers, pickled vegetables, and sometimes satay skewers on the side.
As a flight attendant, this dish is my go-to after a long flight—it’s comforting, quick, and packed with flavours that instantly rejuvenate me.
2. Satay (Grilled Meat Skewers)
Where to try it: Sate Khas Senayan in Jakarta or Jimbaran Bay in Bali.
Satay is a crowd-pleaser that you’ll find all over Indonesia. These tender skewers of marinated chicken, beef, or lamb are grilled over charcoal and served with a creamy peanut sauce. The smoky aroma and nutty flavour are irresistible.
In Jakarta, I’ve enjoyed satay in upscale restaurants, but in Bali, there’s nothing like sitting on the beach in Jimbaran Bay, watching the sunset while savouring this iconic dish.
3. Babi Guling (Balinese Suckling Pig)
Where to try it: Warung Ibu Oka in Ubud, Bali.
If you’re in Bali, don’t miss Babi Guling. This dish features tender, spiced suckling pig roasted to perfection. It’s seasoned with a blend of turmeric, garlic, and other local spices, giving it a flavour profile that’s uniquely Balinese.
I discovered this dish during a layover in Bali, and it has since become a highlight of my trips. Pair it with steamed rice and sambal (spicy chili paste) for an authentic experience.
4. Soto Betawi (Jakarta Beef Soup)
Where to try it: Soto Betawi Haji Husein in Jakarta.
Soto Betawi is a rich, creamy beef soup native to Jakarta. Made with coconut milk, aromatic spices, and tender chunks of beef, it’s comfort food at its best. The addition of fried shallots, lime, and emping (crackers made from melinjo nuts) adds texture and zest.
I often enjoy this hearty dish during a rainy day layover in Jakarta—it’s like a warm hug in a bowl after navigating the city’s busy streets.
5. Gado-Gado (Indonesian Salad)
Where to try it: Any street vendor in Jakarta or a health-conscious café in Bali.
For a lighter option, Gado-Gado is a must-try. This vibrant salad combines boiled vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and hard-boiled eggs, all smothered in a luscious peanut sauce.
As a flight attendant who’s mindful of health and wellness, I love how this dish is both nutritious and indulgent. It’s a perfect choice when I want something fresh yet satisfying.
Tips for Flight Attendants Exploring Indonesia’s Cuisine
- Embrace the street food: Indonesia’s warungs are where the magic happens. They’re budget-friendly, authentic, and filled with locals who can offer great recommendations.
- Don’t shy away from spice: Sambal is a staple in Indonesian cuisine, and it’s worth trying even if you’re not a fan of heat—it adds depth to every dish.
- Pair your meal with local drinks: Try fresh coconut water in Bali or es cendol (a sweet iced dessert drink) in Jakarta to complete your culinary adventure.
Indonesia’s cuisine is as diverse as its landscapes, offering something for every palate. As a flight attendant, I’m constantly reminded of how food connects us to a place and its people. Whether you’re wandering through Jakarta’s bustling streets or lounging on a beach in Bali, these dishes will take you on a flavourful journey you won’t forget.
So, next time you have a layover in Indonesia, be sure to indulge in these culinary gems. Trust me, they’re worth every bite!
