If you’re like me, a solo female traveller and love a solo travel food experience to eat your way through a city, there’s no better introduction to Alicante than a Alicante food tour. I join this Secret Flavours Food and Tapas Tour just a few hours after arriving. As a solo female traveller, it turned out to be the perfect way to connect with locals, learn the lay of the land, and dive into the culture one bite (and sip) at a time.
A Delicious Introduction to Alicante
The experience began at the Central Market, a buzzing hub of colour and scent, where we met our incredibly knowledgeable guide. Right away, I knew this wasn’t just going to be about food—it was going to be about stories. With every turn through Alicante’s charming streets, he painted the city’s rich past: pointing out buildings that still stood strong beside others bombed and rebuilt—old and new woven together in stone and spirit.
History, Culture & One Very Grand Fig Tree
As we wandered between tastings, we passed an enormous fig tree, sprawling right in the heart of the city—centuries old and still thriving. It felt like a symbol of Alicante itself: deeply rooted, vibrant, and full of character. Along the way, sculptures lined the streets, ready to be burned for the upcoming Hogueras de San Juan festival. This festival is one of Spain’s most visually explosive celebrations. Read my post about the festival here.
We also ducked into what may be the oldest tapas bar in the city, and yes—it lived up to the title. Low-lit, full of laughter and clinking glasses, it felt like stepping into a living postcard.

Meeting Makers, Not Just Eating
What made this tour really special wasn’t just the 20+ tastings (though the local wine, handmade sweets, regional cheeses, and farm-fresh meats were unforgettable). It was the human connection. We met family-run deli owners, vendors who’d been selling in the market for generations, and people truly passionate about their craft. Their hospitality was genuine, and I left each stop with more than a full stomach—I left with stories.
Why Food Tours Are Perfect for Solo Travellers
If you’re travelling solo like I was, food tours are an ideal way to connect—not just with the culture, but with fellow travellers too. By the second stop, we were all chatting like friends. That’s the beauty of sharing good food and wine: it breaks the ice every time.
