Christmas Market with ferris wheel

As someone who spends most of my time at 30,000 feet, I’ve had the privilege of visiting some incredible destinations during my layovers and vacation days. But there’s something truly magical about Christmas markets that captures my heart every single time. The twinkling lights, the aroma of spiced wine and the festive atmosphere create memories that last long after the holiday season ends. Here are seven Christmas markets around the world that are absolutely worth adding to your travel bucket list.

Salzburger Christkindelmarkt, Austria

When: November 20 – January 01, 2026

Where: Cathedral Square (Domplatz) and Residenzplatz, Salzburg Old Town

The Salzburger Christkindelmarkt in Austria’s UNESCO World Heritage Old Town is truly one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the world. Dating back to the 15th century, this historic market takes place in the heart of Salzburg at Cathedral Square, with additional stalls spreading into Residenzplatz.

What makes this market special is not just its stunning Alpine setting, but the incredible selection of traditional Austrian treats. You’ll find Lebkuchen (spiced gingerbread cookies), Stollen (fruit bread dusted with powdered sugar), and warm Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake with plum compote). The Glühwein here is exceptional, served in beautiful ceramic mugs that make perfect souvenirs. For music lovers, the Salzburg Advent Ensemble performs Mozart’s greatest hits at Hohensalzburg Fortress every evening from December 1st to 23rd.

Vienna Christmas Markets, Austria

The Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market offers a particularly regal experience in the palace’s main courtyard, while the Belvedere Christmas Market provides a more intimate setting with stunning baroque architecture as your backdrop. Don’t miss trying Punsch (a warm alcoholic drink similar to Glühwein but often made with rum), Maroni (roasted chestnuts), and Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent cookies).
