While in Bangalore I am always camera-ready and head to the KR Market bright and early. I love being there as the sun rises, watching the flower section burst into a riot of colour, filling the air with the delicate scent of fresh blooms.
This historic market turns into a floral paradise drawing in vendors and florists along with photographers and tourists captivated by its beauty. The market’s atmosphere is a lively blend of haggling shoppers and skilled vendors. They start their day well before the sun rises, traveling to the market to set up their stalls. The flower market is not just a place for buying and selling; it’s a cultural experience.
Walking through the market, one can also witness the incredible skill of the garland makers. They are predominantly women, who weave delicate flowers into intricate patterns. These garlands, varying from simple daily wear to elaborate designs for brides, showcase the craftsmanship involved.
The people of the market add to its charm. Additionally, I have learned that they come from diverse backgrounds. They share a common love for flowers and a dedication to their trade. Many vendors have been part of this market for decades and are familiar faces to the regulars. They are quick to share stories of the market’s past, adding a rich historical context to the visitor’s experience. Just ask!
For anyone traveling to Bangalore, a trip to the flower market is a must.
I haven’t edited any of the images in this blog post as I wanted to especially give you a glimpse, a feeling, of what it’s like to be there.
Finally, as with any large market with lots of people, make sure you look after your personal belongings. Locals have warned me several times to keep my valuables close and watch out for pick pockets.
