Melbourne combines trams, trains and buses with walkable city laneways. Check current ticketing and the temporary fare scheme before travelling, especially for a longer stay.
Transport information last checked:
Use myki for supported Melbourne public transport journeys. Victorian public transport has a temporary half-price scheme from 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027: the standard full-fare daily cap of A$11.40 is reduced to A$5.70. Check product conditions and your travel date; airport SkyBus is separately ticketed.
Surface routes connect city streets and inner suburbs.
Pro Tip: Check both ends of your journey against the official zone map before deciding whether you need to touch on.
Rail connects the city with suburbs and wider outings.
Pro Tip: Plan the station exit as well as the train; Flinders Street can be a useful starting point for city walks.
Local buses fill gaps in the network; SkyBus uses its own airport tickets.
Pro Tip: Compare the complete airport-to-accommodation journey rather than calling a coach cheaper or faster than every taxi.
Laneways and river paths offer a slower way to explore.
Pro Tip: The Yarra River and Capital City Trail are useful starting points for a planned cycle route.
Stored-value travel with applicable fare limits.
A prepaid product for consecutive days of eligible travel.
Card and mobile options depend on the supported service and device.
Melbourne Airport: SkyBus Melbourne City Express connects with Southern Cross. Checked adult fares are A$25.90 one-way or A$43.40 return (A$21.70 each way when using the return ticket). Confirm the ticket and fare conditions at SkyBus Melbourne City Express. The fare reduction for ordinary public transport should not be assumed to include this private airport service.
Avalon Airport: use the official Avalon City Express page for stops, fares and current departures. No unconfirmed fare or fixed travel time is included here.
Do not plan an airport trip around an unconfirmed rail opening. Use the official Melbourne Airport Rail project information and current Transport Victoria journey information for the services operating on your date.
The statewide half-price scheme runs from 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027. During the scheme, the standard adult daily cap of A$11.40 becomes A$5.70, and the standard concession cap of A$5.70 becomes A$2.85. Product-specific eligibility, pass treatment and the date boundary must be checked on the official half-price travel page. No future post-scheme fare is assumed.
Exact myki Pass prices and contactless rollout scope were not independently confirmed in the final accuracy pass. Use Transport Victoria ticketing information and official tap-and-go information before relying on a bank card rather than myki. Do not assume support on every mode or for every concession.
For the Free Tram Zone, check the current map and rules with Transport Victoria. A journey that leaves the zone needs the appropriate ticket. Follow the touch-on/off instructions for your actual mode and zone; do not touch off automatically on every tram.
Flinders Street is a useful starting point for central laneways. St Kilda and the Dandenong Ranges need longer journeys; use the official journey planner for the current connections. Puffing Billy has its own heritage-railway timetable and tickets, not an ordinary myki fare.
The Metro Tunnel opened on 30 November 2025, with the full timetable from 1 February 2026. Check Metro Trains' Metro Tunnel information and current service changes before choosing a route. Around major events, allow extra time without assuming one particular line is always affected.
