The Atlas Bar in Singapore is an Art Deco Gin Paradise

Atlas Bar Singapore

In my 48-hour guide to Singapore, I mentioned the Atlas Bar in Singapore, a bar that feels like stepping into The Great Gatsby’s most extravagant party. That place is Atlas and it deserves its own spotlight. This isn’t just a bar; it’s a destination, an architectural marvel and a gin lover’s dream come true. If you’re looking for an excuse to dress up and experience pure, unadulterated glamour, this is it.

The Story Behind the “Gotham” Building

Atlas is located on the ground floor of Parkview Square, a building so grand and imposing that locals have affectionately nicknamed it “Gotham.” Completed in 2002 by the late developer C.S. Hwang, the building itself is an Art Deco masterpiece inspired by the iconic skyscrapers of 1920s New York and Europe. In 2017, his granddaughter, Vicky Hwang, transformed the lobby into Atlas, a bar that celebrates the elegance and culinary traditions of the Jazz Age.

The moment you step inside, you’ll understand the vision. The space is breathtaking, with soaring ceilings, intricate brass details and the pièce de résistance: a three-story-tall tower housing a library of spirits. It’s a place that feels both grand and welcoming, where every detail has been meticulously crafted to transport you to another era.

A Gin Lover’s Pilgrimage

As a passionate gin enthusiast, Atlas holds a special place in my heart. It boasts the world’s largest collection of gin, with over 1,300 different labels from around the globe. The gin tower is a work of art and browsing the extensive menu feels like a journey through the history of this incredible spirit. They even have a vintage collection, offering the chance to taste gins from as far back as the 1910s. It’s a truly unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

What to Expect: Cocktails, Menu & Atmosphere

The cocktail menu at Atlas is a masterclass in European elegance. The Atlas Martini is absolutely divine. It’s a refined take on the classic made with Ford’s London Dry Gin, blanco vermouth, orange bitters. It’s secret weapon is champagne vinegar. At around S$25 (about $18 USD), it’s surprisingly reasonable for a world-class cocktail. Try the Cafe Royal Special, a champagne cocktail with gin, sloe gin, pineapple, and sweet vermouth. It’s another standout that perfectly captures the bar’s sophisticated spirit.

For food, they offer elegant small plates including olives, spring chicken and charcuterie boards that pair beautifully with their gin selection. The dessert menu features delights like crêpes mille-feuille, perfect for ending the evening on a sweet note.

Dress Code: Embrace the Glamour

This is absolutely a place to dress up for and honestly, you’ll want to. The official dress code is Smart Casual from 5 PM, which means no shorts, athletic wear, flip-flops, Birkenstocks, or Crocs. For gentlemen, long trousers and covered shoes are required. The atmosphere calls for a little black dress or a sharp blazer — it’s one of those rare places where getting dressed up feels like part of the experience rather than a chore.

Solo Dining: A Perfect Bar Experience

I often travel solo and Atlas has become one of my absolute favourite spots for a sophisticated evening out. Taking a seat at the bar is not only perfectly acceptable but encouraged. The bartenders are true artists and watching them craft cocktails is mesmerising. On my last visit, I spent the entire evening at the bar, moving through different gins and learning about their provenance from the incredibly knowledgeable staff.

The bar seating puts you right in the heart of the action, surrounded by the towering gin collection. It’s the perfect spot for a solo traveller to feel part of the sophisticated buzz without feeling out of place. The staff genuinely care about your experience and are more than happy to guide you through their extensive menu, making recommendations based on your preferences.

Is Atlas Worth It?

In a word, yes. The Atlas Bar in Singapore is more than just a bar; it’s an experience. It’s a celebration of history, architecture and the art of the cocktail. Whether you’re a gin aficionado, an Art Deco admirer, or simply someone who appreciates a touch of glamour, Atlas is a must-visit on any trip to Singapore. It’s one of my favourite bars in the world and I have a feeling it will be one of yours, too.

✈️ Flight Crew Tips

•Make a reservation. While you can sometimes get lucky with a walk-in, especially on weekdays, it’s always best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

•Go in the afternoon for a quieter experience. If you want to chat with the bartenders and really explore the gin collection, a weekday afternoon is the perfect time.

•Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations. The staff are experts and can help you find the perfect gin or cocktail to suit your taste.
