The first time I visited the Margaret River wine region was over 30 years ago. Xanadu Winery was the very first winery I stepped into. I still vividly remember the breathtaking beauty of the setting. Surrounded by lush vineyards stretching endlessly, the crisp air, and the sense of discovery that came with tasting wine straight from the source. Since that day, Xanadu has held a special place in my heart. Xanadu is a go-to choice for me. Whether I’m wine shopping at home or looking to revisit the magic of Margaret River.
The History
Established in 1977, Xanadu Winery is one of Margaret River’s pioneering wineries. Its name is inspired by the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It evokes a sense of adventure and discovery that defines its wines. With a commitment to quality and innovation, Xanadu has earned a reputation for crafting wines that reflect the region’s unique climate.
Wines That Shine
Xanadu specialises in classic Margaret River varieties. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the way.
- Chardonnay: Their Chardonnay’s are a personal favourite of mine. Xanadu’s Chardonnays are celebrated for their balance, elegance, and complexity. They typically feature notes of stone fruit, citrus, and a subtle hint of oak. They have a creamy texture that has made them award-winners on both national and international stages.
- Cabernet Sauvignon: Known for their structure and intensity, Xanadu’s Cabernets offer rich flavours of dark berries, cassis, and fine tannins, making them a standout among Margaret River reds.
- Other Varieties: Xanadu also produces exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and blends that showcase the vibrant freshness and aromatic qualities of the region.
Visiting Xanadu Winery
Located just a short drive from the town of Margaret River, Xanadu Winery is easily accessible. From Perth, it’s approximately a three-hour drive south along the scenic Bussell Highway. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by lush vineyards and a welcoming cellar door. They also have a stunning restaurant that over looks the vines.
Best Time to Visit
The Margaret River region is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring (September to November) when the vineyards are lush and the weather is mild. Autumn (March to May) is another excellent choice, coinciding with harvest season and offering a chance to see winemaking in action.
Xanadu’s wines have earned numerous accolades, including multiple awards at the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. Their commitment to sustainable practices and minimal intervention winemaking ensures that each bottle captures the essence of Margaret River’s unique environment.
For me, Xanadu is more than just a winery—it’s a place of nostalgia, discovery, and indulgence. Whether you’re a Chardonnay lover like me or prefer a bold Cabernet, Xanadu offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly blends world-class wines with the natural beauty of Western Australia.
